- Explains how to dial TO a specific country and FROM a specific
country -
Date October 2000 -
While in the Netherlands: - 06 - most numbers beginning with
06 means the call is free - - but be aware many 06 numbers are in fact
highly expensive pay numbers. Free numbers do start with 06. Free numbers
are all those that start 0800, or 06-0, 06-2, 06-3000 and 06-3009, and
only those. Have actually now checked with phone book. The exception to
this rule is the emergency number (now 112) which is free. Otherwise only
the above applies.
- - 06-0410 - Operator both dialing in and outside the Netherlands
- free
- - 06-8008 - local information - costs NLG 0.85 per call
- - 06-0418 - international information - osts NLG 1.05 per call
- - 06-112 - emergency -

I am offering cheap B&B addresses all over The Netherlands
- The price can be lower, if a customer will consider to rent an apartment
for a week or so - If customers insist on staying within Amsterdam then
I am afraid, that they have to accept cheap budget hotels - But why to
be in Amsterdam where trains in the Netherlands are running 24 hours a
day (where elsewhere do you find in that in our sophisticated world ?).
So enjoy the B&B in The Haque and be within half an hour or so in Amsterdam.
That's safer too !
Can you cope with above or do you need further information ? Note that
another B&B agent in London is calling me the most informative agent
they ever had. Or with other words: stay in a Dutch family home and gain
a better personal experience about the Dutch. Kind regards, KLOOS DUTCH

cheap when we were in Amsterdam (about 5 years ago).
-- Reply Posted by Vike - you can easily find something under 50 bucks
if you go to a dormitory or something like that. plenty of space! (Warmoestraat)
-- Reply Posted by Andrew - Around the canal district, near the
central station you'll find lots of 'youth hotels'. They have dorm rooms
and also you can get private rooms, you shouldn't have trouble finding
something I stayed at a place called the Kabul about a year ago.
-- Reply Posted by Rossi - Don't know what level of comfort you're
looking for, but I stayed at Bob's Youth Hostel about 10 years ago, including
dorm beds and breakfast. It's a bare-bones place, but great atmosphere
and good late night social scene in the common room downstairs. They also
had a locker behind the counter that kept my stuff safely enough. For a
bit more, I heard okay things about the International Youth Hostel -- Good
luck.

Reply Posted by Stephanie Hotel Brian on Singel 69 has great
prices and a cozy atmosphere. If I remember right it was 50 guilders for
the two of us to stay there. If you go right from the train station you
will see the Doors coffee shop and The Bulldog. That is the street that
Hotel Brian is on. It is on the left side of Singel Street. They serve
breakfast every morning too. Most places in Amsterdam are pretty cheap
to stay in so I wouldn't worry about spending too much on a hotel.

- I am allison - I was in amsterdam june of this past summer - stay at
youth hostels. there are three youth hostels that i know of in amsterdam.
bob;s youth hostel is located central and is across from the grasshopper
(coffee shop). this hostel i stayed in and it was over crowded, stinky,
and the central area that everyone hung out in was smoked filled and could
get you high from pot just standing there. they did have lockers and served
food, with no curfew. the nicer youth hostels are called the flying pig.
they are a part of europe's top five. there is one by the station and one
by vondel park. these are supposed to be nicer because they used to be
5 star hotels. sounds cleaner and a bit more private for the same amount
of money. hope this is of some help - you will have fun in amsterdam -

-- by Lisa - In Amsterdam, there's this pub/hostel with an Irish bent
(the owner's wife is Irish). It's located on the edge of the Red Light
District and only about a 5 minute walk from the train station. There's
mostly just coffee houses (read: hashish joints) all around the place,
so don't be put off by the "edge of the red light district". At any rate,
they've got hot showers, great big Irish breakfasts, great friendly guests,
and individual lockups beside your bed for your stuff.
-- Inquiry posted by Marnie: : Need cheap accomm. for 2,-: any
offers? Reply by Brian Schoppe - try the Arena hostel. It is quite a walk
away from the city center, but it came at a low cost to us. However, it
has a nice atmosphere that is quietly unique. It is an old hospital that
has been converted. It is nice if you are a younger person. I was there
just last may on trip with a school I was attending in London. Very much
English speaking. If you a little older you might want to take the safe
be and try the holiday inn. I have read in the Financial Times (British
version of Wall Street Journal) that they are running some specials this
time of year. You can also make reservations with them by call there 1-800
number in the U.S.

= Youth hostels can be pretty unpredictable, especially in Amsterdam.
Things to watch out for: They tend to be dirty and crowded, especially
the bathrooms that are shared by dozens of people. Some of them have lockouts
and curfews. Sometimes the smaller and more private places offer a better
value, even if they are less known.
